Notes from 9/17/24 Deer Meeting

On Tuesday, September 17th, a meeting was held in Columbia to discuss the deer problem in the Ellicott City local communities, including Dorsey’s Search, Dorsey Hall and Gray Rock Farm.  The meeting was organized by Dorsey’s Search and run by the Manager of Howard County Recreation and Parks, along with other members of the organization.

Mr.  Tim Maynard presented a series of slides explaining the State of Maryland’s deer management system.

Here are the highlights:

The deer population in Howard County currently exceeds the limits, thereby causing damage to plants and forests; allowing for the spread of invasive plants; damage to farm crops; spreading disease and leaving other wildlife with no food.

In 2023, Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks used drones to survey the county.  Through this survey, they estimated that there are about 100 deer per square mile in the Centennial Park/Dorsey Hall Open Space area.  The County goal for a healthy deer population is 15 to 20 deer per square mile.

There are two ways of hunting the deer that are approved by the State.  One is by managed hunting by either bow and arrow or hunting rifle, which began in 1998 and has proved effective.  The other is a sharpshooting program using high-powered rifles with scopes which began in 2004.  In both cases, only skilled and trained shooters are allowed to participate; each shooter must apply to be vetted and complete a background check.  They also must pass the Maryland state shooting proficiency test.  Several of the local parks are participating this year.

Not every area is included every year.  The County decides the needs of each area and which areas need the most attention.  Gray Rock Farm is not included this year, despite our large population of deer.  It is recommended that we form a Task Force to make ourselves heard.  Also, anyone who lives in Gray Rock and is an accomplished archer or sharpshooter is welcome to contact the County if they are interested in participating.

There was discussion on the signs that are put up in the areas being targeted.  They are very general and do not specify days or locations – only the time between January 15th and April 15th.  This is not fair on the homeowners living close to the areas because they are afraid to walk in or near the designated places, in case the hunting is imminent.  Mr. Maynard took note the discussion.

If you have any questions for the County, please call 410-313-4700, or visit the website howardcountymd.gov.  If you are interested in serving on the Gray Rock Task Force, please contact one of the Boards Members.
